Meet the Author
Hi, I’m Kathy Gonzalez—the creator of Milestone Maths and a long-time homeschool mum.
With over 30 years of teaching and tutoring experience, I’ve spent much of my life helping students make sense of maths. From tutoring my high school peers in the late 1980s, to lecturing large university classes, to working one-on-one with young learners, I’ve always focused on breaking complex ideas into steps that actually make sense.
Alongside this, I hold a PhD in Computer Engineering, which has shaped the way I think about structure, logic, and how mathematical ideas connect across different stages of learning. Combined with years of hands-on teaching, this allows me to design lessons that not only make sense in the moment, but also build deliberately toward the more complex concepts students will encounter later on.
Homeschooling at the Heart
For the past 18 years, I’ve been homeschooling my three boys.
I’ve guided my two eldest all the way through to graduation, and they are now studying engineering at university. My youngest, who is currently working through the primary levels, was the inspiration behind Milestone Maths.
Through homeschooling, I’ve seen firsthand what works—and what doesn’t—when teaching maths at home. That experience sits at the heart of every lesson.
In addition to teaching my own children, I tutor both homeschooled and mainstream students, including those with additional learning needs, particularly in literacy and numeracy.
Why I Created Milestone Maths
Milestone Maths grew out of a need I kept encountering—families trying to make overseas or classroom-based programs work in a homeschool setting.
I wanted to create something different:
- a program designed specifically for homeschoolers
- clear enough for parents to teach with confidence
- structured in a way that supports real understanding over time
Every part of the program reflects that goal.
A Little More About Me
I live on a rural property in Queensland’s Burnett Region with my husband and our three boys.
I enjoy baking bread, spending quiet time outdoors with my family, and finding new ways to make maths “click.”
Milestone Maths is very much a labour of love, shaped by both my professional experience and my life as a homeschool mum.
