Milestone Maths is designed to make teaching and learning maths at home clear, structured, and manageable.

Each lesson follows a consistent format, so both parent and child know what to expect. This reduces stress, builds confidence, and allows the focus to stay on understanding—not on figuring out what to do next.

A Clear Lesson Structure

Every lesson is built around four simple parts:

1. Learn Together
A new concept is introduced step by step, with clear explanations and guided examples.
In the early levels, this is designed to be worked through together. As students become confident readers, many are able to work more independently, with video support available when needed.

2. Practice Independently
Students apply what they’ve just learned, building confidence through carefully structured questions.

3. Review and Practice
Previously learned skills are revisited regularly, helping to strengthen understanding and prevent gaps from forming.

4. Skill Sharpener (Optional)
Short, focused practice to build fluency and reinforce key skills.

A Balanced Approach to Learning

Milestone Maths combines two well-established approaches to maths learning:

  • Mastery — focusing on one concept at a time until it is well understood
  • Spiral Review — regularly revisiting previous concepts to keep skills fresh

Rather than choosing one over the other, Milestone Maths brings these together in a balanced way.

New ideas are taught clearly and thoroughly, while ongoing review ensures that earlier learning is not forgotten. This helps students build both understanding and confidence over time.

This balance was built into the program from the beginning, rather than being tacked on later.

Designed for Homeschoolers from the Start

Milestone Maths is not adapted from a classroom program. It is designed specifically for use at home.

That means:

  • Lessons are written to be taught by a parent, not a trained teacher
  • Instructions are clear and practical
  • The pace is flexible—you can move faster or slower as needed
  • The structure supports teaching multiple children at different levels

Everything is built with the realities of home education in mind.

Supporting Independent Learning

As students progress, Milestone Maths is designed to support increasing independence.

From Level D onwards, a growing library of video tutorials is being developed to guide students through each lesson. This allows children to work more confidently on their own, while still having clear explanations available when needed.

Parents remain involved, but the day-to-day teaching load can ease as students become more capable.

Simple, Flexible, and Practical

Milestone Maths is primarily print-based and designed to be straightforward to use.

Most activities use simple materials you already have at home, especially in the early levels where hands-on learning is important. There is only one required special purpose manipulative, Sumstix, which are used extensively in Levels A and B and occasionally in Level C.

There are no complex setups or subscriptions—just clear lessons that you can open and use straight away.

This makes it:

  • easy to take anywhere
  • simple to fit into your day
  • reliable and consistent over time
