While I’m not convinced, as some educators are, that place value is the holy grail of mathematics education, it does have its uses so kids do need to have a basic understanding of it.
In Milestone Maths, we use place value for two practical purposes:
- To help with mental calculations
- To help with rounding numbers which, in turn, is used to help with estimating values and that can help with… mental calculations 🙂
The (free!) workbook below gives extra practice with place value and expanded notation for those who need it. Feel free to download it and print off as many copies as you need for the kids in your (immediate) charge (be it a class full or a family). The booklet is suitable for students in approximately years 4 & 5.
