One of the most common questions I heard from parents at a recent homeschool expo that I attended was, “Do you have anything for prep?” It was obvious that Australia needed a Foundation Year homeschool maths curriculum. Unfortunately, I didn’t have one. Yet.
I pointed each parent to the articles I have on early years maths here on the blog but also promised them that Level A would be coming soon. Well, I never make a promise I don’t intend to keep, so here we are. Book A1 is out today!
Level A (Foundation / Prep / Kindy) will be a staged release:
- Book A1 (for term 1) is out today.
- Book A2 will be out in time for term 2
- Books A3 and A4 will be out in time for terms three and four respectively.
Note: Books A1 and A2 will contain the core curriculum requirements for this level. Books A3 and A4 are extensions which will overlap with level B to some extent. You can stretch out the content in books A1 and A2 to take up the entire year and skip over A3 and A4. You can use A3 and A4 as a “slow start” to year 1. You can start A1 very early (from about 3 years of age) and keep “replaying” the favourite activities. There are lots of options! This is not a prescription, it’s a homeschool help that will help you set your kids up with the foundation they need to succeed in maths.
If you’ve used the older levels, you know that Milestone Maths is all about hands on practical maths combined with academic rigor. Level A is the perfect, gentle introduction with a very hands-on play-based vibe for the entire year. We practice some pencil skills but no writing at this level. We play with and learn all about Sumstix in a fun and unthreatening way. And we learn to count to ten. Really count. Not just rattle off a sequence of number names. This is probably the most important foundation for future success in maths.
And the best part? You can have Level A for FREE! Yes you read that right! I want as many children as possible to have access to a high quality maths education so I’m making this all important foundation level available as a free download. Of course, if you prefer real paper (and die cut stickers!) you have that option as well.
